How Jotit Transformed Their Training Videos

The Challenge

Growing Pains

Jotit was experiencing rapid growth. With a new school year around the corner, with a new and improved UX interface and new compatibility with the Canvas LMS - and a slew on new users in schools in the US and overseas. Lots of new features and options, lot's of explaining to do.

Disengaging Videos

While managing Jotit's social media marketing, I noticed their tutorial videos weren't matching the quality of their innovative software. The Customer Success Team at Jotit were in charge of creating these videos. This team is amazing at interfacing with schools, and teaching students one-on-one but they are not video professionals (and why should they be?) -

So they were using Loom for recordings their tablet screens tethered to their computers with Vysor and talking through the process. This was a bare-bones solution and the results were disengaging.

They utterly failed at capturing the attention of all the different users (of different ages!) The content was hard to follow, with interface elements often too small to see clearly.

The Real Cost

Jotit was unknowingly leaving user engagement and learning effectiveness on the table. Their tutorials (barely) worked, but they weren't optimized to help teachers, administrators, and students truly succeed with the software.

Because of that, the users often ignored the videos - setting to learn on their own and missing crucial features that the developers slaved over for months.

The Scaling Dilemma

As content demands increased across platforms and languages, Jotit faced a choice: continue with their basic disengaging recordings or invest heavily in professional video production for every tutorial.

Neither option was sustainable - the first compromised quality lost users along the way, the second was prohibitively expensive.

The Solution

The Diagnosis

When Jotit sent me a new Loom recording asking for simple branding additions, I saw the bigger picture. While I could add a little logo animation produced in Canva, that would only address a fraction of the real problems these videos had.

The issues ran deeper than branding - they needed a complete rethink of their video production approach.

Software Selection Process

I had originally introduced Jotit to Loom, but they were using it outside its strengths. Loom excels at replacing meetings, not delivering detailed presentations.

After researching and testing multiple screen recording solutions, I recommended Camtasia for three key reasons:

  1. Dedicated Excellence: Camtasia does one thing exceptionally well - screen recordings with all tools optimized for this specific purpose

  2. Intuitive Interface: Significantly more user-friendly than professional tools like After Effects, while offering robust functionality

  3. Manageable Investment: Professional-grade features at a reasonable price point

Template Development

Moving to Camtasia unlocked powerful features like precise mouse control and professional editing capabilities. I designed a comprehensive, reusable template system incorporating:

Essential Elements:

  • Professional Branding: Consistent intro and outro sequences

  • Clear Video Titles: Dedicated title slides for each tutorial

  • Presenter Integration: Reusable intro/outro recordings per presenter to maintain personal connection

  • Smart Layout Design: Horizontal background with presenter thumbnail overlay to accommodate vertical tablet usage in horizontal video format

  • Key Takeaways Section: Structured summary limiting each video to 3-5 key points (videos requiring more become separate chapters)

  • Background Music: Subtle audio enhancement throughout

  • Friendly Call-to-Action: Personal support offer and branded closing

Best Practices Implementation

Beyond the template, I provided strategic guidance on video creation best practices focused on retention and engagement, ensuring each element served the learning objectives.

Training Development

Currently producing step-by-step instructional videos using Camtasia itself, creating a "fool-proof" system for Jotit's team to replicate professional-quality results independently.

The Results

Immediate Transformation

  • 20+ professional videos produced across multiple schools and languages

  • Consistent professional branding across all educational content

  • Enhanced visual clarity with proper sizing and highlighting

  • Improved user engagement through structured presentation and visual appeal

  • Scalable template system adaptable for different presenters and platforms

Operational Impact

  • Cost-effective scaling: Professional quality without ongoing videographer expenses

  • Internal capability building: Team empowerment through comprehensive training system

  • Quality standardization: Consistent experience across all tutorial content

  • Platform flexibility: Seamless adaptation for Canvas LMS, Google Classroom, and future platforms

Strategic Positioning

Jotit now has a sustainable video production system that maintains professional quality while enabling rapid scaling - solving both the quality and cost challenges that previously limited their tutorial effectiveness.

What's Next

The training phase is establishing long-term self-sufficiency, with the expectation that after initial guidance, Jotit's team will produce professional-quality tutorials independently, requiring minimal ongoing support.
